Related to horses and rhinoceroses, tapirs tend to reach lengths of seven feet and stand three feet tall, weighing up to seven hundred pounds. Wearing short coats of red brown, gray, or black, adult tapirs raise young, wearing striped and spotted coats for protection. Possessing a probing proboscis, tapirs take down leaves and food that would be out of their reach without it. Living for three decades, tapirs enjoy swimming, wallowing in mud, foraging, and eating. Tapirs have been known to eat almost ninety pounds of food in one day!
